Don’t kill creativity by forcing productivity

Since I got back into writing fics this year, I set one really important condition for myself so I wouldn’t give up: don’t be too hard on myself.

That’s because I used to get kind of paranoid about updating ongoing fics every week, like it was an obligation… and not a hobby.

I guess the most obvious realization is: you don’t force a hobby, you don’t force something you do for fun.

But I always end up forgetting that. This week, for example, I spent the whole time pressuring myself to finish rewriting chapter two of How to Save a School, but like… forcing myself for what? Sure, I did plan to post at least one chapter a month, since it’s a more elaborate fic and all, but it’s still something I do for fun. I’m not being paid for it, there’s no boss or clients expecting a deadline from me.

Plus, I have a million other fic ideas too, but there’s no need to rush, seriously. My conclusion is that sometimes we call it productivity when we force ourselves to finish something creative, but there’s actually nothing productive about it...it just ends up causing stress.

Anyway, I’ve decided to take it slow, and if I didn’t make much progress this week, that’s okay… next week I’ll try again.

All yours,

Babooshka.
